“That’s It – I Quit” – How To Stop Being A Salon Owner
In this day and age with all the hype to be “somebody”… really anybody… why not, right!? You open up your dream salon, put all your time and energy into it, and then one day find yourself wishing it would all just go away. Sound familiar? Don’t worry you are not alone. Most salon owners start a salon with the wrong mentality first and this is why statistically we may not be cut out for the BIG job. That’s right I said it, it is a BIG job that is separate from just inspiring that team you hope to create. If you do not put time into your business, you won’t have one. How do I know this? Well, I was a driven and passionate stylist that wanted to make my own place that was better than any others I had experienced. I thought the hardest part was going to be getting money and taking the risk to hire a team. I was completely wrong. The hardest part was that I lacked most of the essential business fundamentals to take me from the red to the green. And no I am not talking about the golf green.
Anyway back on track! Which leads me to my point…TRACK! Track everything – Track how many people you hire per year and how many you fire. Track product month to month. Track sales. Track success. Track staff meetings and retreats. Measure all the successful things you have accomplished so you can take those wins and start building your systems so that you never feel the way you feel right now. Or hopefully, if you are a new salon owner, this blog will help you not make the mistakes millions of salon owners face each year. So you want out? Well, instead of that, how about dive in and find the passion and reason you started your salon to begin with. Don’t worry, you may think “how will I ever sell this place” or “how am I going to get out” or “I actually hate running a salon – I wish I could just go back to working behind the chair”. Well I am here to remind you that you are not going that way and I am here to help Start by taking time to breathe and make yourself a plan. Find a business coach or reach out to us at SalonScale to help you in the darkest times or as I said before, help you before you hit the bottom. Business is so much more than just doing great hair and keeping the lights on.
